Before you get started, if you have external displays connected to your PC, choose the display you want to change. Select the display you want to change. When that’s done, follow the instructions below. Stay in, or open, Display settings. Open your Display settings. Select Scale , then select an option. Typically, it’s best to choose the one that’s marked Recommended. In the Display resolution row, select the list and choose an option.

It’s usually best to stick with the one that’s marked Recommended. Monitors can support resolutions that are lower than their native resolutions, but text won’t look as sharp and the display might be small, centered on the screen, edged with black, or stretched. This is another slider that lets you balance the brightness between the two images. Adjust this slider until you like the looks of both images. At the top is a drop-down menu labeled Change the size of text, apps, and other items.

We recommend using at least percent scaling on p display resolutions and higher to make it easier on your eyes, but find the scaling that works best for you. Custom scaling is not recommended as it can really mess things up. Then below that is the display orientation for landscape and portrait mode options—landscape is the default.

The default is to use the Extend these displays option, which lets you use both displays as one big desktop. That way when moving the mouse across the desktop to the left or right the mouse moves to the second display automatically.

You can also choose Duplicate these displays , which can be helpful if you want to show one display to a group and navigate on the laptop screen facing you.

Here, you can rearrange where your monitors are in physical space by clicking and dragging the monitors around. Do not plug in your second monitor yet. Power on your PC. Press the power button on your laptop or desktop tower to do so. If your monitor is turned off, turn that back on as well. Right-click the desktop and select Display settings. This opens the Display settings window. Plug in the second monitor.

Windows will automatically detect the monitor and install any necessary drivers. Once the monitor is detected, you should see two monitors under “Multiple displays” in the right panel. The monitor labeled “Monitor 1” is the one that’s now plugged in to the primary port.

The one labeled “Monitor 2” is now the second monitor that you just plugged in. If you connect a third monitor, it will be detected as Monitor 3, and so on.

Windows has automatically recreated the registry entries you renamed earlier, so there’s no need to return to the registry. Include your email address to get a message when this question is answered.
